Golden Globe Musings: Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a TV Series

Golden Globe nominations for this year will be announced soon, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anyone important. A reminder that last year’s nominees mean zilch at the Globes and that the race is almost entirely unpredictable.

Last year’s nominees:
Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black)
Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey)
Regina King (American Crime)
Judith Light (Transparent)
Maura Tierney (The Affair)

Two of these nominees didn’t go on to be nominated at the Emmys after past wins here - Aduba and Froggatt - and I’m curious as to whether they’ll be back here or not. King is a miniseries contender but won two consecutive Emmys, so she could return here too. Light had a great season and will be back if voters are paying attention, and I’m not sure about last year’s winner Tierney, whose show disappeared elsewhere last year after winning the top trophy the year before. From the miniseries and TV movies, watch out for Olivia Colman (The Night Manager). Of the new contenders, Thandie Newton (Westworld) is strongest, if she doesn’t end up in the lead race, and she’ll face tough competition from Constance Zimmer (UnReal), Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Chrissy Metz (This Is Us), and [I really hope not] Miley Cyrus (Crisis in Six Scenes).

Current predictions:
Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things)
Olivia Colman (The Night Manager)
Regina King (American Crime)
Judith Light (Transparent)
Thandie Newton (Westworld)
