Golden Globe nominations for this year will be announced soon, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anyone important. A reminder that last year’s nominees mean zilch at the Globes and that the race is almost entirely unpredictable.
Last year’s nominees:
Aziz Ansari (Master of None)
Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle)
Rob Lowe (The Grinder)
Patrick Stewart (Blunt Talk)
Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)
New contenders:
Woody Allen (Crisis in Six Scenes)
Ted Danson (The Good Place)
Donald Glover (Atlanta)
Zach Galifianakis (Baskets)
Walton Goggins (Vice Principals)
Thomas Haden Church (Divorce)
Danny McBride (Vice Principals)
Nick Nolte (Graves)
Potential first-time nominees:
Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)
Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth)
Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley)
Past nominees:
Don Cheadle (House of Lies)
William H. Macy (Shameless)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Count out Ansari since his show didn’t air this year, and Lowe because his series was cancelled. I’m also not sure that Bernal will be back even though he won last year since Globe voters don’t tend to have institutional memories. Likely to join the ranks are Anderson, Glover, and Church, but it could just as easily be any of the others.
Current predictions:
Anthony Anderson (Black-ish)
Donald Glover (Atlanta)
Thomas Haden Church (Divorce)
Nick Nolte (Graves)
Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent)
