Golden Globe Musings: Best TV Series – Drama

Golden Globe nominations for this year will be announced soon, so here’s a survey of the contenders and the most likely predictions at this time. Weigh in with your thoughts, and let me know if I’ve left off anyone important. A reminder that last year’s nominees mean zilch at the Globes and that the race is almost entirely unpredictable.

Last year’s nominees:
Empire
Game of Thrones
Mr. Robot
Narcos
Outlander

New contenders:
Billions
The Crown
Designated Survivor
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld

Past nominees:
The Affair
Downton Abbey
The Good Wife
Homeland
House of Cards
Mad Men
Masters of Sex

This category dumps shows regularly, as its preservation of just one nominee from the year before last year indicates. Count on “Game of Thrones” to return, and I suspect “Mr. Robot” will be back too, though it’s hardly assured. “Westworld” is a lock to join the list, and I imagine “Stranger Things” will be as well. I wouldn’t be as confident about “The Crown,” though most seem to be, and I’m curious if the crowdpleaser “This Is Us” can make the cut. I’m still betting on “Narcos” to return, though that’s probably foolish. We’ll see what surprises await!

Current predictions:
Game of Thrones
Mr. Robot
Narcos
Stranger Things
Westworld
