What I’m Watching: Shameless

Shameless: Season 8, Episode 11 “A Gallagher Pedicure” (B+)

Approaching the end of the season on this show always catches me off-guard, but I know that there’s much more of it to look forward to since season nine has already been commissioned and, due to its resilience and creativity, there’s reason to expect even more of it after that. Fiona, the enterprising businesswoman, is realizing that she’s in way over her head, at risk of owing five million dollars on top of being kicked out of her apartment by the squatters who changed the locks and refuse to even speak to her, and so she’s getting dirty, stealing her cat back and making sure that they can’t have a pleasant existence without caving to her. Frank, who has been through several business plans this season, is back to trying to collect other people’s social security funds, something that isn’t working all too well but is still probably more successful than taking home the measly $3.42 a week that he’s entitled to as a result of working a full six weeks his entire life. Cozying up to Liam’s friend’s rich parents is probably a better plan. Lip was loyal to Sierra, picking a fight with her recently-released father and making sure that he got sent right back to prison as a result. Ian embraced his role as Gay Jesus, lying down in front of the van to sacrifice himself and then torching the van so that it could explode dramatically behind him. Debs didn’t want to spend the money to go the proper route to fix her toes, and after both she and Liam passed out, Frank came in to finish the procedure awfully casually. Cassidy responded way too excitedly to everything Carl showed her about his old life, and I don’t see any way out of this other than him killing her, something that would of course be a possibility on this show. I’m glad that Svetlana has moved on to being aggressive her competition rather than trying to listen to the absurd ideas hatched by Kev and Veronica, and maybe she’ll be able to score the money she wants with the rich older husband that wasn’t supposed to be hers after all. I’m eager to see what resolution we get in the finale and what’s still left on the table for season nine!
