What I’m Watching: Insecure (Series Finale)

Insecure: Season 5, Episode 10 “Everything Gonna Be, Okay?!”

I’ve often found that the second-to-last episode of most TV seasons is superior to the last, and while this wasn’t a bad ending at all, I feel like the previous installment was more full of action and dramatic turns. This was a series of birthday parties, celebrating milestones as a way to check in with each of the characters, which did work pretty well. Issa calling Lawrence on his birthday and then faulting him for answering was typically awkward, and I like that they were both with other people at the time so it seemed like things couldn’t necessarily have worked out. I did like Nathan, and the way that their relationship dissolved didn’t feel so terrible, and, ultimately, it’s good to see Issa return to the person she was with at the start of the series. His life is different now, but Issa and Condola used to be good friends, and Lawrence’s son appeared to have a strong and positive bond with Issa at the end of the episode. Tiffany being bored in Denver and Kelly deciding to have a baby provided some nice closure for the true supporting players, but it was especially sweet to see Molly end up happy. Getting the devastating call about her mom was tough, and it was so wonderful to see her happily married to Taurean, one of this show’s nicest characters, and then complaining to Issa about how annoying it was to travel with a man. I’ve enjoyed this show, and I hope it earns some deserved recognition for Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji this fall at the Emmys.
