What I’m Watching: House of Lies

House of Lies: Season 3, Episode 4 “Associates” (B-)

It might have been too easy to have Jeannie come back and work for Marty as if nothing had happened between them, but there’s something utterly dissatisfying and off-putting about Jeannie being so cold and business-like to Marty. She does have her strengths, but it’s the two of them that make an unbeatable team. Treating Marty as if she deserves everything that he has given her is only half fair, and her indignation won’t serve her well, though Marty likely won’t be able to stand up to her enough to get the upper hand in that dynamic. Doug’s return to Marty’s pod wasn’t all that satisfying either, mainly because Jeannie got bored with Marty making Doug think that he didn’t have a place for him at his new firm. Clyde, on the other hand, is bottoming out, and it’s a good thing that Marty, who isn’t anywhere close to forgiving him or offering him a job, came to get him from the police station so that he can start to undo the damage that Monica did to him and to put his life back together. Lex isn’t exactly a nice kid, but it’s still good to see Roscoe score a win for once. Casting Mekhi Phifer and T.I., who had a great recurring role on Starz’s short-lived “Boss,” as the two displeased partners, was a smart and successful choice, and they might actually make for some coherent and compelling clients for Marty’s newly strengthened but hardly invincible company to take on.
