What I’m Watching: Justified

Justified: Season 5, Episode 4 “Over the Mountain” (B+)

Leave it to Dewey Crowe to mess up an execution, pulling out his gun before his victim had finished digging the grave and then butchering the shot, leaving him to be found by the police in a very obvious way. At least Dewey was smart enough to leave him behind and get a ride on an ATV, back to the unfortunate welcome that is his cousin Daryl imprisoning him until he can figure out what to do with him. It’s great to see Jacob Lofland, one of the two great child actors from last year’s “Mud,” as Kendal Crowe, a foul-mouthed kid who was cool as ice under pressure, volunteering to go when Raylan pulled a bold move and opted to take Kendal away from the adult violence going on around him. The Crowe family threatened to kill him right then and there, and let’s hope Raylan has some backing from his superiors on his latest move. Art going to Detroit and finding out that Raylan was present when Nicky got taken out is not good news, and let’s hope that ammunition doesn’t hurt Raylan too much. He seems to be doing quite well in what has become a serious relationship with Allison, whose story about her client was rather unsettling. Ava telling the guard that he was a little short for a stormtrooper was great, and it’s a relief to learn that the female prison guard is on her side and has ensured that she won’t be bothered by him again. The best line of the episode was uttered by Raylan to Boyd: “I’m overcome trying to factor how many weapons you’re armed with,” but a close second for the best scene was the brief moment of Boyd challenging Tim during a game of Scrabble.
