Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Tuesday, July 16th. As always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.
Last year’s nominees: Zazie Beetz, Alex Borstein, Aidy Bryant, Betty Gilpin, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, Laurie Metcalf, Megan Mullally
The competition: Eight nominees made for a very crowded category last year, and just one of them isn’t eligible this time around: Zazie Beetz, whose show has yet to return for a third season. This could mark the third year in a row that three performers from the same variety show are featured, with two-time winner Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Aidy Bryant (Saturday Night Live), and Leslie Jones (Saturday Night Live) all in contention again, and others like Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live) likely to get some votes. Last year’s winner Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will undoubtedly be back, and her costar Marin Hinkle (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) might just crack the lineup too. Betty Gilpin (GLOW) may return, though it will depend on how her show does. After landmark returns after years off the air last year, Laurie Metcalf (The Conners), technically competing for a fresh series, and Megan Mullally (Will and Grace) don’t have the same buzz, and are also defending their slots without any support elsewhere for their shows. A nominee from two years ago, Anna Chlumsky (Veep), will almost certainly be back now that her show is eligible for its final season. Other possibilities to join the lineup for the first time include Olivia Colman (Fleabag), Hiam Abbass (Ramy), D’Arcy Carden (The Good Place), and Sarah Goldberg (Barry).
The predicted nominees: Borstein, Chlumsky, Gilpin, Hinkle, McKinnon, Mulllally
The predicted winner: I think Borstein repeats.
