What I’m Watching: Stargirl

Stargirl: Season 1, Episode 10 “Brainwave Jr.” (B+)

For a show that features such a peppy lead character, it can get pretty dark and violent sometimes. It was good to see Henry choose the right side when confronted with the notion of being close to his father, who proved immediately when Henry found him that, though he had forgotten the past ten years, he was still evil at heart. He had no trouble slipping right back into the same intimidating, villainous persona when he gave his son one chance to choose to be on his side, and boasting that he and not Jordan killed his own wife when she showed her true loyalty was the ultimate blow. Killing his own son is an even more horrific act, and while he may survive, things don’t look good. Courtney was just overjoyed to know that she had a cousin, though the reply to Barbara’s e-mail that she got indicates that maybe her father wasn’t who she thought since Starman being dead was an established fact in the origin story of this show. Barbara was furious when she found out that Pat had lied to her, and fortunately, thanks in part to the nostalgic flashback of them meeting and sharing a banana split, she took what he and Courtney said seriously enough to record Jordan’s parents speaking all too freely in front of her. Though they didn’t fare all too well, it was good to see the whole team suited up, and to be made fully aware of Cindy’s loyalties as she repeatedly begged her father to let her kill Courtney.
