What I’m Watching: B Positive

B Positive: Season 1, Episode 4 “Joint Pain” (B+)

Many of this show’s plot developments may be expected, but that doesn’t make them less any less entertaining. We’re learning a small amount about Drew’s dialysis buddies from his time spent with them, including that Jerry is divorced and that Samantha is dating a man who she proudly states hates women. Gina continues to make Drew a little bit crazy with the things she likes to do, resulting in a freak-out when he got his hand stuck to the waxing pad, but she also knows how to manage him and make him a little bit calmer. Sitcom storylines about smoking pot are never all that sophisticated, but it’s great to see Thomas Middleditch commit to the bit and to the physical comedy of falling down when he went over in a stoned fit of rage to get his prized owl back. The best exchange of the episode was his delivery of “But I have an emergency key!” and her response of “Then use it!” A close second was his insistence that he wasn’t a doormat but that he would in fact be keeping the doormat. Having sex with Julia is something that’s probably not going to work out well for him, but it’s entertaining to see the way that they’re falling into old habits, plus it’s a great opportunity for Gina to be the one making smart decisions for once. Her knowledge of this surely made-up universal code to opening the vending machine was particularly impressive, and it’s a helpful complication that Julia seems to really like Gina.
