What I’m Watching: Home Economics

Home Economics: Season 2, Episode 7 “Speeding Ticket, $180” (B-)

This episode didn’t particularly wow me since I didn’t buy one of its plotlines and wasn’t all that enthralled by the other. Tom is not quite as oblivious as he seems, and therefore he would realize that him doing anything remotely exciting without Marina would be hurtful, especially when it pertains to her heritage and things she’s wanted him to do for years. That said, I do think people have a tendency to fulfill expectations and hopes only when someone isn’t looking, though I didn’t believe that Tom would actually have jumped off a waterfall or stolen his brother’s car since those actions just don’t fit with his personality. Not knowing how to drive a stick shift and getting pulled over immediately because he was speeding made more sense. The tattoo bit where Marina changed her mind because Tom had two fewer letters than Tomas was also over-the-top since Tom was clearly in immense pain if even Marina thought it looked like it hurt. Connor wasn’t too respectful of how Shamiah confiding in him made her moms feel, and Sarah went way overboard to cleanse the house of any potential lesbian literary influences in an effort to seem more relatable to their teenage daughter. Their dorky dance reaction to finding out that they were “cringe” was pretty hilarious, and only served to legitimize Shamiah’s initial decision not to involve her moms in her love life. I do enjoy that Connor fulfills many basic stereotypes and is somehow proud of that fact.
