What I’m Watching: Insecure

Insecure: Season 5, Episode 2 “Growth, Okay?!” (B+)

Issa really has come pretty far since she started, and she’s on the verge of really blowing up, as evidenced by the major milestone in terms of Instagram followers. What wasn’t as great, however, was the unpredictability of Crenshawn, who didn’t seem too open to the notes that Issa had to give him from Seth, and then went ahead and went even more all in on his artistic vision that might be considered far too edgy in the execution. Issa was ready to never work again as a result, but Seth was somehow wowed by all of it and prepared to find her even more money, which is a really great and surprising development that Issa definitely did not see coming. I’m definitely on Team Nathan, and so it was sweet to see the two of them in Issa’s bed together before she started crying, ending the night a bit prematurely. Molly’s new hairstyle is a major change, but she seems very happy in her professional life in a way that wasn’t quite so clear a year ago. The pressure she was getting from her family to start dating was both annoying and very entertaining, especially when it came to the first option who showed up, who was eager to share the religious remixes he had made that are absolutely not Molly’s speed. It’s affirming to see the renewed closeness that these two best friends have, helping to anchor them as they navigate interesting new moments and journeys in their lives.
