What I’m Watching: What We Do in the Shadows (Season Finale)

What We Do in the Shadows: Season 3, Episode 10 “The Portrait” (B+)

This show is pretty random sometimes but still manages to work, like with the casting of Donal Logue as a vampire version of himself who also happens to have taken up painting during some free time on one of the series sets he loves to drone on about while he’s painting a portrait. The vampire tradition of sitting for a portrait that doesn’t include their recently deceased comrade as a way of mourning is certainly problematic, and while Guillermo is far from a trained grief counselor or expert, he at least knows that they’re incapable of properly processing what they’re feeling and likely to make brash decisions that they’ll ultimately want to undo once they truly ponder what they need. After telling Guillermo he didn’t need him, Nandor changed his mind when Guillermo proved his worth by nearly killing him, and I’m sure all that goodwill is going to go away now that Nandor believes he’s been abandoned at the train station by his loyal bodyguard and future fellow vampire. Laszlo not going with Nadja was relatively predictable, simply because he didn’t want to go back to England but also didn’t want to hold her back. The bigger reveal, which also isn’t too much of a surprise, was that Colin apparently regenerated as a baby version of himself, one who will probably be a cross between Groot and the Colin we all know and mostly detest. I took on watching this show because everyone else (and Emmy voters) seems to love it, and while it’s still not my favorite, I can appreciate its quality and humor.

Season grade: B+
Season MVP: Kayvan Novak as Nandor
