What I’m Watching: Burn Notice

Burn Notice: Season 7, Episode 4 “Brothers in Arms” (B+)

This episode changed things in an extremely dramatic and impactful way, and it’s almost hard to believe that it actually happened. Burke marching in without a moment’s hesitation to save Michael’s life is a big deal since it means both that Burke is entirely loyal to those around him and that he trusted Michael implicitly, but that’s all made moot by the fact that, in a terrific scene, Burke sacrificed himself in order to help Michael get away. Now, Michael has two problems: having proven himself to someone who is no longer alive and whose confidence might mean nothing to someone higher up on the food chain, and convincing the other person Burke wanted desperately to save that he is trustworthy. I’ve said a few times that this deep-cover op is going to dominate the tone of this show this season, and when even Jesse and Sam are impressed by the devotion of a bad guy like Burke, it’s clear that he’s going to figure prominently into what happens this season, even in death. The opening scene with Michael standing over an innocent girl was uncharacteristically dark for this show, and I suspect that’s just the beginning. At least there’s a silver lining to be found somewhere, which was the kind and charitable act by Madeleine of giving the daylong captive she and Fiona dragged around Miami a new life with the woman he loves because, not too surprisingly, she has a soft spot for spies who want to start over.
