Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actress in a Drama Series

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 18th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Kathy Bates, Glenn Close, Claire Danes, Michelle Dockery, Julianna Margulies, Elisabeth Moss

The competition: Cross just one name off the list for sure: Kathy Bates, whose show ended last year. Most probably think that Glenn Close (Damages) is no longer eligible, but her show ended last summer, and she actually stands a decent shot at returning even if she doesn’t deserve to. The other four nominees from last year are all but guaranteed: Claire Danes (Homeland), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men). From freshmen series, I think the best bet is Robin Wright (House of Cards), whose show might be overlooked because it airs on Netflix. Keri Russell (The Americans) is also a possibility, but she has nowhere near the same Emmy track record as Danes, and FX shows aren’t consistently embraced. Connie Britton (Nashville) and Lucy Liu (Elementary) are past nominees for other shows, and Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel) is also a contender for a very juicy role. Past nominee Mariska Hargitay (Law and Order: SVU) could also return. Because I can’t resist the appeal of an underdog, I’ll pick an unusual choice for the final slot: the very deserving Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), whose plays a handful of roles on a sci-fi series on BBC America. That’s a tough sell, but she definitely has the potential to make the cut.

The predicted nominees: Claire Danes, Michelle Dockery, Julianna Margulies, Tatiana Maslany, Elisabeth Moss, Robin Wright

The predicted winner: Claire Danes
