Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 18th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Jim Carter, Brendan Coyle, Peter Dinklage, Giancarlo Esposito, Jared Harris, Aaron Paul

The competition: Last year, all six of the nominees from the year before were eligible, and only one made the cut. This year, I’m predicting just two, both the most recent victors in this category: Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). That’s out of a total of four, since both Giancarlo Esposito and Jared Harris are ineligible. “Downton Abbey” boys Jim Carter and Brendan Coyle will likely be forgotten as enthusiasm for the British series dies down. In their place, look for two old-timers, Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) and Sam Waterston (The Newsroom). If Emmy voters board the Netflix train, Corey Stoll (House of Cards) is a good bet, and Bobby Cannavale (Boardwalk Empire) is a familiar Emmy name who might make the cut as well. Past nominees John Slattery (Mad Men) and Walton Goggins (Justified) might return, while new face Noah Emmerich (The Americans) could also contend. Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) is a strong possibility to join costar Paul, and I’m sure there are a handful of other contenders who could surprise here too.

The predicted nominees: Bobby Cannavale, Peter Dinklage, Mandy Patinkin, Aaron Paul, Corey Stoll, Sam Waterston

The predicted winner: Paul
