Family Tree: Season 1, Episode 8 “Cowboys” (B+)
It’s strange to review this episode with absolutely no idea whether this show will ever be back. Fortunately, it was a fitting send-off with an endearing ending, and so whether or not it returns is ultimately inconsequential. There wasn’t as much for Tom to discover about his family history and his racial origins in this episode, but there was still a formidable tale of a ridiculous scandal that was entertaining as always. Another Christopher Guest regular was present, in the form of Bob Balaban, and I loved how well his signature deadpan demeanor was used, particularly when he responded to Tom’s suggestion that one of the four methods of murder might have been responsible for Tumbleweed Tim’s death and when he chimed in about the legalities of accepting donations. Bea losing Monk was a marvelous instance of comedy and drama blended together, and it was great to see Tom spring into action to help make his sister whole once again. I enjoyed Pete’s inability to process American culture, highlighted by his lack of comprehension of available seating at an outdoor restaurant and his rant about American football. Tom’s romance with Allie was one of the best parts of this episode, as they managed to have a great time together learning about his heritage and then things looked iffy when he abandoned her outside to hear his model-constructing cousin’s conspiracy theories. That sweet moment at the airport at the end was a marvelous way for this quirky, individualistic show to sign off. If it returns again, I’ll watch it, but this has been a fitting and appropriate run.
