Emmy Predictions: Best Lead Actress in a Comedy Series

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 18th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Zooey Deschanel, Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Melissa McCarthy, Amy Poehler

The competition: The problem with this race is that there were seven nominees last year and all of them stand a fantastic chance of returning. Last year’s winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) is a sure thing, as is Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation). Lena Dunham (Girls) is safe unless there’s a backlash against her show, and it would be hard to imagine Tina Fey (30 Rock) missing out on a nomination for the first time for the final season of her show. Zooey Deschanel (New Girl) is a likely inclusion, and Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie) shows no signs of slowing down. That leaves Melissa McCarthy (Mike and Molly), who won two years ago and returned despite expectations to the contrary last year, who will probably miss the mark. Watch out for Laura Dern (Enlightened), who didn’t get nominated after a Golden Globe win last year and might make the cut for the second and final season of her spirited HBO show. Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project) could also earn a nomination, as could former nominee Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope), who took home the trophy for Best Guest Actress in a Drama Series last year.

The predicted nominees: Zooey Deschanel, Lena Dunham, Edie Falco, Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Poehler
