What I’m Watching: Wilfred

Wilfred: Season 3, Episodes 3 and 4 “Suspicion” and “Sincerity” (B)

It’s not all the time that we’re explicitly reminded that Wilfred is in fact a dog, and this show tends to be especially clever when it showcases Wilfred interacting with other members of his species. These two episodes were fine but weren’t entirely satisfying, and maybe that’s because they didn’t actually drive the greater storyline forward, focusing on isolated incidents of Ryan investigating Kristen’s new boyfriend and trying to impress an old high school flame rather than the eternal question of whether Wilfred exists only in Ryan’s head. Barry Watson’s guest spot was brief and unmemorable, while Gina Gershon had an even shorter and stranger bit part that fits pretty well with her past record of TV guest appearances (see “Rescue Me” for an example). Jenny Mollen was plenty irritating, as was supposed to be the point, as Kim, putting on dog voices that were like nails on a chalkboard to Wilfred’s ears but also using obnoxious expressions that made Ryan’s attraction to her seem less than impressive. Her obsession with treating dogs well was a lot to take, and it’s unfortunate to watch Ryan continue to pine for Amanda and how things were with her while he tries to date other women and find someone who makes him as happy as she did for a while. Little is more disturbing than Wilfred’s perception of Joffrey, however, yet that’s par for the course for this show, and a step up in some ways from the last time they interacted together.
