Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series

The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations will be announced on Thursday, July 18th. Please refer to my Emmy musings for this category for a detailed analysis of the contenders, and, as always, chime in below in the comments with any thoughts of your own.

Last year’s nominees: Christine Baranski, Joanne Froggatt, Anna Gunn, Christina Hendricks, Archie Panjabi, Maggie Smith

The competition: There’s no reason that this exact slate won’t be chosen again this year. In fact, the only one truly in danger of being omitted is Joanne Froggatt (Downton Abbey), whose nomination last year, while deserved, was part of the extreme love for that show that will presumably die down this year. Maggie Smith (Downton Abbey) is a lock, and Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men), Christine Baranski (The Good Wife), and Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad) are as likely as ever. Competing for their spots are a handful of new contenders: Kate Mara (House of Cards), Abigail Spencer (Rectify), Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Emily Mortimer (The Newsroom), and Hayden Panettiere (Nashville). I think that a longtime contender who has always been ignored, Monica Potter (Parenthood), will outpace them for a strong, standout performance driven by her character’s storyline this season.

The predicted nominees: Christine Baranski, Anna Gunn, Christina Hendricks, Archie Panjabi, Monica Potter, Maggie Smith

The predicted winner: Smith

Next up: Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
