What I’m Watching: Dexter

Dexter: Season 8, Episode 2 “Every Silver Lining” (B+)

Overall, this show is still very good, but I can’t help feeling that this season doesn’t yet have a clear direction. Maybe it’s because every year before this one had a specific villain or season-long guest star, and that’s not the case here. Though her new partnership with Dexter is both fresh and crucial, Charlotte Rampling’s Dr. Vogel isn’t enough of a central character for the show to rest on this season. Telling him that psychopaths are an indispensible demographic and that he is exactly what he needs to be while giving him a hug are important, but it all needs to be in service of something bigger than helping Deb get back on the right path. The fact that she feels no remorse for a murder that she almost didn’t realize that she committed was extremely troubling, and Dexter discovering her complicity was a powerful moment. Jamie getting upset with Quinn because he always talks about Deb was understandable given their clear bond shown at the end of the episode, and it’s going to be difficult for anything to break that, especially as Deb continues to spiral out of control. Batista catching on to their relationship and getting yelled at by Jamie was an amusing development, and maybe the two of them can actually whip Quinn into shape. I’m much more curious, of course, to find out who is framing people and sending brains to Dr. Vogel, and to get back to Dexter’s regular stint as a serial killer, something he’s been neglecting lately.
