As I’ve done the past few years, I’m excited to present a detailed look at the Emmy race in each category with a spotlight on every sample episode submitted for consideration to voters. Click on episode titles to read reviews and offer your thoughts in the comments!
Sadly, this isn’t the first year that I’ve been busy during Emmy season and neglected to post predictions for categories given out a full week before the primetime ceremony, thus predicting events in the past. This award has already been handed out – here’s a look at the category anyway.
Larry David (Saturday Night Live) – Host: Larry David
Tracy Morgan (Saturday Night Live) – Host: Tracy Morgan
Martin Mull (Veep) – The Eagle
Bob Newhart (The Big Bang Theory) – The Opening Night Excitation
Peter Scolari (Girls) – Good Man
Bradley Whitford (Transparent) – Oscillate
This is an interesting list, and it’s important to note that Peter MacNicol was originally nominated for “Veep” but then had his nomination revoked because he appeared in more than half of the season, a rule that I think isn’t terribly productive. He was replaced by Scolari, who ended up winning, which is pretty crazy since he was obviously the seventh choice in this race when the nominations came out. I really enjoyed his episode, in which he got a major spotlight and expressed concern over the size of his one night stand’s apartment in New York City. He was a solid part of the best season of “Girls” probably since the first one. I would have predicted David to win his first acting Emmy for his Bernie Sanders impersonation just like Tina Fey did a few years ago for playing Sarah Palin, but alas he and Morgan, whose hosting gig was more of a comeback story than praise of a good performance, probably cancelled each other out. Newhart won before and was amusing in his guest spot, and last year’s winner Whitford had a different role that wasn’t as prominent or noticeable. Mull’s episode submission could have won it for him since he’s revealed to be completely nuts, but enthusiasm about a show in other categories doesn’t always translate to this race.
