Emmy Winner (Post) Predictions: Best Guest Actress in a Comedy Series

As I’ve done the past few years, I’m excited to present a detailed look at the Emmy race in each category with a spotlight on every sample episode submitted for consideration to voters. Click on episode titles to read reviews and offer your thoughts in the comments!

Sadly, this isn’t the first year that I’ve been busy during Emmy season and neglected to post predictions for categories given out a full week before the primetime ceremony, thus predicting events in the past. This award has already been handed out – here’s a look at the category anyway.

Christine Baranski (The Big Bang Theory) – The Convergence Convergence
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live) – Hosts: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
Melora Hardin (Transparent) – Flicky-Flicky-Thump-Thump
Melissa McCarthy (Saturday Night Live) – Host: Melissa McCarthy
Laurie Metcalf (The Big Bang Theory) – The Convergence Convergence
Amy Schumer (Saturday Night Live) – Host: Amy Schumer

There were not one but three (technically four) SNL hosting gigs recognized here, and it stands to reason that one of them would win. I wasn’t enthusiastic about returning nominee McCarthy, while I found Schumer to be far funnier here than on her own variety show. It was impossible to beat the dynamic duo of Fey and Poehler, who make history with this joint win for an admittedly fun show. Baranski and Metcalf evidently cancelled each other out because they were both in the same episode, and I imagine that one or both of them will return again for the same role that they’ll likely play in subsequent seasons. Hardin, the most intriguing addition to this race, might have won if dramatic content had been emphasized over comedic prowess.
