As I’ve done the past few years, I’m excited to present a detailed look at the Emmy race in each category with a spotlight on every sample episode submitted for consideration to voters. Click on episode titles to read reviews and offer your thoughts in the comments!
Anna Chlumsky (Veep) – C**gate
Gaby Hoffmann (Transparent) – Bulnerable
Allison Janney (Mom) — Terrorists and Gingerbread
Judith Light (Transparent) – Flicky-Flicky Thump-Thump
Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) – Host: Ariana Grande
Niecy Nash (Getting On) – Don’t Let It Get in You or on You
All but one of these women was nominated last year, and it’s very likely that the same one will win again. That’s Janney, who serves as the sole representative of her show and is the defending champion with two consecutive wins. Her submitted episode has lots of dramatic content with her meeting the mother she never knew, so that’s more than enough ammunition to propel her to the win. Her steepest competition will probably come from new addition Light, who milks her role for all it’s worth and in her chosen episode has a very different impression of her relationship than her ex-husband does. Costar Hoffman is also a possibility, earning her second nomination and exploring a relationship with an older mentor in her submitted episode. McKinnon is on her third consecutive nomination as a regular player on her variety show, and her Hillary impression could earn her the win if voters are feeling generous, but I suspect they’ll go for Larry David’s Bernie Sanders instead. Chlumsky, who is on nomination number four, has had better submissions in the past, and hunting for the person who called the president by a terrible name is sure to entertain voters but not necessarily win them over. I’m still puzzled by Nash’s inclusion for the second year in a row, and though she shows some personality in her episode, I don’t get why she’s on this list.
Who should win (based on entire season): Hoffmann or Light
Who should win (based on individual episodes): Light
Who will win: It’s probably going to be Janney.
