What I’m Watching: Narcos (Season Premiere)

Narcos: Season 2, Episode 1 “Free at Last” (B+)

It’s fantastic to have what I strongly believe to be the best show on the air right now back, and what an added bonus to read as I sit down to write this review that the series has been renewed for two more seasons! I love how this show feels so epic and that each episode feels like a movie. Pablo escaping from prison could have led to him hiding out for a long time, but instead he immediately refused to be made to feel like a rat and found a way to transport him around the country that he calls home. To me, the most incredible thing is that Pablo gets out of the trunk and walks around wearing a sweater and jeans. That made his showing up next to a disgruntled former employee and then shooting him in the head all the more impactful, and Pablo’s enemies should know that he’s not going away so quickly. As Steve was dealing with his wife leaving the country because she was concerned about her safety, Javier almost managed to catch one of Pablo’s top people, leading immediately to Pablo’s clever taxi plan nearly falling apart. The scene that really wowed me was when Pablo got ambushed by people when he was headed back to the taxi only to find out that they were there to greet him and pay their respects, which he responded to by handing out cash to each of them. Pablo really is a mesmerizing villain who most seem to see as a hero.
