Grace and Frankie: Season 2, Episode 13 “The Coup” (B+)
This was a great season ender for two main reasons – a lot actually happened in the episode, and it tied up the story in a fantastic way that really managed to unite its two adversarial protagonists. Babe leaving Frankie a gallery and Grace a vibrator was interesting since it didn’t exactly match their personalities, but it spurred them on to really think about what they wanted to do. Frankie’s obsession with getting the Kenny Loggins painting back made Sol’s lie from years earlier bubble back to the surface, making her feel like she had been manipulated. Grace finding all of the gifts that Robert had prepared for every possible occasion with pre-written notes got her very mad, and she and Frankie managed to form an alliance out of their joint sense of being maligned, appeased, and ignored. Going into business together to make vibrators for women with arthritis may not turn out to be so easy, but seeing them on the same page is a nice treat. When Coyote yelled at Grace, Frankie stepping in to defend her really turned the tide. I was thrilled to learn that Bud is a leap day baby, but not as much as my wife, who just turned seven this year on February 29th. Seeing all the characters, especially Brianna, who’s defined mostly as a self-recognized bitch, and Mallory, who was just peeing the whole time since she’s heavily pregnant, was great, and I like that they were all together. I think this season was more solid than the first and also helped to develop the relationship between its two protagonists, giving them ample dramatic material as well. I’m excited for season three and beyond, and glad that I stuck with this show.
