What I’m Watching: You’re the Worst (Season Premiere)

You’re the Worst: Season 3, Episode 1 “Try Real Hard” (B+)

What a fantastic debut for the third season of a show that I really like but feel wasn’t quite as even in its second season, which makes its strong return all the more exciting. The revelation that Gretchen doesn’t wash her legs is so odd and bizarre yet miniscule at the same time that it emphasizes what this show is about – entertaining people getting hung up on stupid things and acting terrible towards each other as a result. Gretchen casually saying I love you and then getting chastised by Jimmy was another great example of their absurd relationship, and it was a treat to see Jimmy pretend to be drunk enough to say it again and then eventually admit it because he realized that he was actually interested in knowing how she was doing and feeling ,a sentiment he had never experienced before. Her Spanish-language secret show pitch was also strange, but he wanted to be with her and see what else he didn’t know about her, not to accuse her of being secretive but to learn more about her. Edgar trying to keep his sex life going with Dorothy was an interesting process, and flushing all his pills doesn’t seem like the best solution. Paul appeared to be trying to make his new life with Lindsay fun for her, but making meals together for the next six months is hardly her idea of fun. Stabbing him was a bit excessive, to be sure, but how else could this show ensure that we still love to hate these characters more than just love them? I look forward to a season of hilarious zaniness and insanity.
