What I’m Watching: Vice Principals

Vice Principals: Season 1, Episode 7 “The Good Book” (B+)

So this episode didn’t start at home, but it did set the tone for the episode with Lee finding a hapless student wandering the halls on a day that had been repeatedly announced throughout the week as a teachers’ work day. After getting caught with spit hanging out of his mouth above Dr. Brown’s morning coffee, Lee got to bear the brunt of her wrath, forced to babysit her boys for the whole day. Trying to appeal to their better instincts didn’t work well, and naturally the only solution was to entice them to give him dirt on their mother by showing them porn to prove just how gay he isn’t. Their mad dash back to Dr. Brown’s office was impressive, especially considering just how high both boys were. I loved how Neal tackled Dr. Brown’s ex-husband and then they ended up making a heartfelt reunion while she was in the middle of addressing all the teachers. Neal made a big show at the start of the episode of wishing his daughter a good life, and then he was so incredibly awkward as he cooked Amanda breakfast and she came so close to kissing him, stopped by the fact that he was not reading her signs properly and making a move. I’m so happy that their romance has worked out, culminating in an awesome rooftop kiss. It didn’t even have anything to do with that file – she did it all on her own. After Neal opened up about his relationship with his daughter to Dr. Brown earlier in the episode, he swooped in to see her at the hospital at the end of the installment, giving her a huge hug while the one main character with no children of his own looked on longingly. It was a surprisingly dramatic and very strong finish for a show that just keeps getting better and better.
