Veep: Season 7, Episode 4 “South Carolina” (B+)
Things sure do move fast with a short season like this. It seems that Selina’s “man up” approach has won over a good deal of the nation, and she seems primed as the frontrunner now. Only she could conceive of the idea to go into a black church, headed by Keegan-Michael Key, to praise the police to prove that she was indeed a friend of racists, and somehow she spun that around to a nonsensical recognition of Chinese sovereignty that had everyone puzzled but also managed to fell most of the polling places in South Carolina. For once, it’s not Selina’s who stumbling but everyone else, though that doesn’t mean that those who should be dropping out are doing so gracefully or quickly. Of course Tom would ask Selina for a position and then throw her under the bus on camera by saying that he couldn’t endorse anyone yet, and I like that Calhoun went to ask Jonah for a post while Jonah was doing the same with him. Jonah truly is an incredible character, so committed to the willful spread of stupidity, most notably his vow to ban Islamic math. I also like that he managed to punch his wife in the face during his speech while he was gesturing and then just kept on going because there’s no reason he wouldn’t. It doesn’t seem likely at this point, but I would love to see Selina and Jonah go head-to-head in the final round for the top office in the country.
