What I’m Watching: Upload

Upload: Season 1, Episode 9 “Update Eve” (B+)

It’s so intriguing to see how the simulated world of Lakeview is so fancy and pristine, and the way in which the programmers and angels interface with it looks so archaic and clunky. Nora putting on the gloves so that she could feel what it was like to actually touch Nathan was one such example, and even the two parties happening at once displayed some of the disparity between the two. It was good to finally see Nathan and Nora kiss, though I did question multiple times whether Nora was considering that keeping him awake during the update could mean that he lost all memories of their time together, which would be crushing for her. She brought Byron in to make it seem to Lucy that she wasn’t interested in Nathan, and he was just as clueless as ever, demonstrating how much he misunderstood the meaning of his first orgasm. Ingrid just wanted to jump Nathan’s bones when she showed up at the party, and her response to the breakup was unusually brief but very disconcerting. Learning that her father was the one who had tried to kill Nathan was a shock, and we haven’t yet seen enough of him to understand what his motivations would have been and what Ingrid knew about all of it. I’m glad that a second season is already on the way since I would hate for the next episode to be the last time we saw these characters. It’s hard to know what will happen, and I can’t wait to see it.
