Supergirl: Season 5, Episode 9 “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part One” (B)
The crisis is finally here! I can’t help feeling a bit let down by what felt like an overly crowded episode in some ways and a less fulfilling one in others. Sure, we get to see some of the supporting cast from this particular show in this hour, but otherwise we’re just treated to a very select few from each of the other series. I definitely built this up a lot in my head, as I’m sure many other people did, and it just feels like they’re fighting a void of faceless enemies who are just there to wreak havoc. I don’t quite understand where the Monitor stands in all of this, and I don’t remember Lyla at all, mainly because she mostly appeared on the show in all this that I don’t watch anymore, “Arrow.” The fact that the Monitor didn’t know that Oliver was going to die, and that he had apparently made a deal to ensure Barry’s survival in exchange for his sacrifice, means that what we know to be true is off the table, not that either of them was ever likely to die permanently. I was intrigued to see what might have happened with baby Jonathan as he got sent on a pod to Earth just like his father and aunt were, but there wasn’t much opportunity for that to be explored with the fate of all the universes at stake. I did enjoy Kate’s response to Ray enthusiastically suggesting that he could enhance her suit, and I hope for more such moments in the remaining four hours of this crossover.
