Round Two: Never Have I Ever

Never Have I Ever: Season 1, Episode 2 “...had sex with Paxton Hall-Yoshida” (B)

I wouldn’t say I never expected to like this show, but it certainly wasn’t at the top of my list. But the pilot was fun and I was genuinely intrigued to see what would happen next after Devi received a surprising answer from Paxton when she suggested that they should have sex. She was predictably awkward when she showed up at his house, and after she panicked because he took his shirt off, her crash course in sex positions with her friends didn’t actually help to prepare her at all. I like that he’s got some depth, including his protective side for his sister, and he has no idea that Devi is actually a sincere and nice person who would make a great friend for her. The sex option seems to be off the table because of how everything played out, but I imagine their relationship is still going to evolve. Devi did freak out at Ben in class, and even she knew she had to walk back her wish that the Nazis would have killed him. This show is good at handling harsh humor and acknowledging its inappropriateness. I like that Kamala has depth and a secret relationship she hasn’t told her family about, something she also isn’t comfortable enough sharing with her cousin since they’re not close. I’m intrigued about Fabiola’s storyline since she seems to be attracted to women, which she probably won’t share with her friends even though they would totally understand. I don’t think I have the bandwidth to continue with this show right now, but it could be a fun mindless distraction sometime in the future.
