What I’m Watching: Supergirl

Supergirl: Season 5, Episode 17 “Deus Lex Machina” (B)

This cleverly-titled episode, the first this show has aired in six weeks, filled in some of the gaps that got us to the present moment. Following that montage of Lex expressing his hatred for Kryptonians and Superman in particular, we saw him wake up in the new post-crisis world so genuinely amazed by how the world did in fact looked like he had always dreamed. Lillian was a helpful ally for him, chiding him for not being cutthroat enough in the world he came from and encouraging him to channel his inner evil while taking advantage of his new position. He was so nice to Eve, who seemed to build a true partnership with him, but we saw at the very end of the episode that it was all an act. Needing to reveal his true nature may well be his greatest weakness, since the Eve of this world may be inspired to go tell Supergirl the truth about her being tricked into killing Jeremiah after he revealed that it was his men who pose the danger to her family. Lena was sincere in her offer of condolences to Kara, and that angered Lex enough that he had to intervene and make sure that she felt just as betrayed as ever to cut Kara out of her life once and for all. M’gann’s return was welcome, even though it was Supergirl who ultimately shrunk the sun eater, and the best ally that these superfriends have right now is William, who means well and even bakes!
