What I’m watching: Run

Run: Season 1, Episode 4 “Chase” (B+)

This episode actually featured the least interaction we’ve seen so far before Ruby and Billy, but exposing us to other parts of their lives made this whole thing seem a whole lot more serious. Fiona was already a threat to their happiness when she introduced herself to Ruby under a fake name and then recorded them having sex, and we saw in this episode that it wasn’t only recent anger about how Billy handled his last gig that made her act like this. Deleting the “run” text Ruby sent right before she was about to get married was harsh, and the reason she knew where he was turned out to be that he told her about this pact, making her the most well-informed and dangerous threat to any hopes he might have of escaping his old life. Positioning herself as the only person Ruby could confide in was conniving, and, before she blew her own cover, she was pushing pretty hard for Ruby to go home. Ruby calling Laurence and finding out about her son’s injury and the au pair he apparently hired in such a short window is a brutal reminder that life is still going on, and that even coming back now is going to bring with it serious consequences. Giving Fiona the money was the right choice in the face of what she was threatening to do, and it doesn’t seem like they have any shot of finding her after her shocking jump from the train. I have no clue what comes next.
