What I’m Watching: Doom Patrol

Doom Patrol: Season 2, Episode 4 “Sex Patrol” (B)

This episode was admittedly quite strange, even for this show, but I’m not sure why I didn’t expect that we’d encounter sex ghosts and that the world might be about to end because there was just too much sexual energy in the world. I like that this show has recurring characters like Flex Mentallo who just show up whenever help is needed since they’re not tied in the same way to the Chief but still understand that he and Danny have done so much for them. It was interesting to see how our three nicer main characters, Rita, Vic, and Larry, reacted to having this giant dance party and occasional orgy, each trying for something that they couldn’t quite achieve. Rita’s goal turned out to be much more dangerous than she thought, and I enjoyed that Cliff, who was so excited about being high, wasn’t thrilled with the suggestion that he jump in to save the day because his robot body didn’t have the same weaknesses as the rest of their human selves. Though she’s going through considerable soul-searching, and personality-battling, Jane showed up to save the day and the world, doing what was necessary in a fearless and rather brutal way. Dorothy staying up past her bedtime was not a good thing since she listened too closely to her imaginary friends, who have now convinced her that Danny was a prison and not a safe haven. Rita telling her to focus on her other qualities wasn’t good either since now she’s going to have an entirely new perspective on life that’s sure to be very dangerous.
