What I’m Watching: The Walking Dead: World Beyond

The Walking Dead: World Beyond: Season 1, Episode 5 “Madman Across the Water” (B)

This show really is focused on its core characters, featuring only a few guest players in Elton-related flashbacks and not showing us any more of Julia or the nefarious goings-on related to her. We did find out that Felix was originally supposed to go with Iris and Hope’s father, which meant that he wouldn’t have been there to protect them but also that he could have kept Leo from getting into the kind of situation where he would need to send a coded message to his daughters for help. The efforts to get the group to turn back were predictably met with failure, and the fact that they won’t go back and discover what happened right after they left is probably worse since they have no idea what they’re going to be walking into when they finally reach their destination, which I suspect will be at the end of this season. Hope seemed most furious with the idea that Felix would try to subvert them, and fortunately Huck isn’t one to hide her intentions or feelings. Elton’s experience wandering out as a young child to find his father dead and never again hear from his mother was indeed harrowing and violent. I knew I recognized his mother, who also appeared in the pilot, and that’s because she was played by Christina Brucato, who appeared in “Legends of Tomorrow” and other Arrowverse shows as Lily Stein. He doesn’t seem any closer to knowing the truth, but he’s obviously hiding a darkness that I imagine will come out at some point.
