AFT Awards: Best Comedy Series

This is the twenty-first and final category of the 6th Annual AFT Television Awards, my personal choices for the best in television during the 2011-2012 season. Nominees are listed in the order I’ve ranked them.

Best Comedy Series

Last year’s nominees: The Big C, Hung, Modern Family, Parks and Recreation, Shameless

Emmy nominees: The Big Bang Theory, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Girls, Modern Family, 30 Rock, Veep

Semi-finalists: Apartment 23, Bored to Death, Chuck, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Enlightened, The Finder, Glee, How To Make It In America, Hung, Life's Too Short, The Office, Psych, Royal Pains, Suburgatory, Suits, 2 Broke Girls, 30 Rock, Weeds, White Collar, Wilfred

Finalists: New Girl took a little time to find its funk, but after that, it became a hilarious and wonderful show with a superb cast. Shameless followed its depraved characters on even wilder and more deplorable adventures than ever before. The Big C told two seasons of light drama and dark comedy with sharp performances and strong storytelling. Californication found Hank in yet another sex-fueled mess, and supporting characters and storylines enhanced its overall enjoyability. Eastbound and Down returned for a third season with an even more determined offensive Kenny ready to wreak havoc on everyone else’s lives.

The nominees:

House of Lies was a ferocious, fantastically entertaining dark comedy with great performances and delightfully biting scripts. Modern Family was warm and endearing as always with its talented troupe of comic actors portraying one big, complex, wacky family. Veep was on the ball with its political satire and wit, featuring marvelous self-deprecating turns from all actors involved. Girls showcased a marvelous sense of the modern day in its captivating stream-of-consciousness exploration of young women’s lives.

The winner:

Parks and Recreation continued to be the funniest show on television, embracing a new direction and succeeding awesomely with its terrific ensemble.
