What I’m Watching: Wilfred

Wilfred: Season 2, Episode 12 “Resentment” (B+)

It’s nice to see a slightly more hopeful and generally positive half-hour spent with Ryan and Wilfred here, thanks in part to the guesting talents of one Chris Klein as the dim-witted but generally quite likeable Drew. It’s also a pleasure to see Jenna so giddy about getting married, constantly crying out with joy about her impending nuptials. Watching Wilfred put on his glasses and lecture Ryan about getting to work on the vows was by far the funniest part of the episode, and Wilfred’s swallowing of the ring led to predictably troublesome times, highlighted by Wilfred’s determination never to make a bowel movement again. Even though Drew got shot in the leg, everything worked out for the best, as Ryan nobly offered to host the wedding in his backyard, prompting excitement from both Jenna and Drew, and satisfying ringbearer Wilfred. It was wonderful to see Ryan go talk to Amanda and to see them both simply smile when she opened the door, and I really hope that their relationship works out, though I suspect it may involve some honesty that could prove difficult to digest. The ending scene was especially welcome since it was a return to the old closing moments of the episode, depression-free and instead sentimental turned horrible, thanks to Wilfred’s understanding of how they were talking about ways that they wanted Ryan to die, rather than how they themselves might like to die. They’re at their best when they’re in harmless, utterly senseless and disturbing conversation with each other instead of making dangerous decisions that might actually affect those around them.
