What I’m Watching: Damages

Damages: Season 5, Episode 8 “I’m Afraid of What I’ll Find” (B+)

We’re just two hours away from the end of this series, and it’s looking more and more like the events we’ve seen via flash-forward are going to transpire before we get too many answers about how Naomi’s personal information got leaked and the real, complete truth about Patty, Pete, and Ellen’s assailant, Patrick. After she had the police look into him and tipped off Pete’s widow, Patrick didn’t waste any time coming to New York, and from the looks of it, he may have been the one that pushed Ellen off the roof before reporting her demise to Patty. It’s interesting that Patty’s recollections of the attack on Ellen have prompted her to open herself up to scrutiny in pursuit of this Supreme Court position. There’s much deception still going on, with Rutger finally confessing to Channing and then Gita going behind everyone’s back to tell Patty about Torben. If only this case actually had anything to do with whether Channing or McClarenTruth.org were actually guilty of anything. In the pursuit of taking down Ellen, Patty is alienating her allies, most notably Bill, and the case is nowhere closer to being won by either side. It’s not a huge surprise that Kate is Patty’s half-sister, and it makes sense that she’d reach out to Michael on her father’s behalf, something he was surprisingly receptive to and which made Patty truly furious. Watching Channing supervise the editing process for Chris’ information was truly a sight, and it’s good to see Chris get this achieved, so long as it doesn’t blow back on him.
