The competition: Steve Buscemi’s Atlantic City gangster (Boardwalk Empire), Bryan Cranston’s meth cooker (Breaking Bad), Jeff Daniels’ temperamental news anchor (The Newsroom), Jon Hamm’s ad man (Mad Men), and Damian Lewis’ conflicted Congressman (Homeland).
For your information: There are four returning nominees in this category and one freshman contender. Both Buscemi and Hamm won for the first year of their shows. This is the fifth non-consecutive nomination for Hamm, while Buscemi and Cranston are on number three, and Lewis, this past year’s Emmy winner, number two. Daniels has three film nominations on his resume but has never won. All but “Mad Men” are nominated for Best Drama Series. Four times in the last five years, this award has gone to the star of a freshman series.
Who should win? All excellent nominees, truth be told. I’d pick Buscemi, Hamm, or Lewis this year.
Who will win? I think it’ll be Daniels, but Lewis could certainly win too.
