The competition: Connie Britton’s Southern singer (Nashville), Glenn Close’s cutthroat attorney (Damages), Claire Danes’ eccentric CIA agent (Homeland), Michele Dockery’s posh heiress (Downton Abbey), and Julianna Margulies’ maternal lawyer (The Good Wife).
For your information: Close, Margulies, and Danes all won previously for the freshman seasons of their respective shows. This is the first nomination for Close since 2009, when her show aired its second of five seasons, and it’s highly unlikely that she would win again. Margulies is back for the fourth year in a row, while Danes returns for nomination number two after winning last year. This is the first outing for both Britton and Dockery at the Golden Globes. “Downton Abbey” and “Homeland” are both nominated for Best TV Series – Drama.
Who should win? All good choices, minus Close. I’d go with Danes or Britton, though the other two are great too.
Who will win? There are a few examples of the winner of this category not being from a freshman series, but, aside from Edie Falco, no one has won this category twice in a row in the past twenty years (and she didn’t even do it consecutively). That suggests that Britton is the frontrunner.
