What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 2, Episode 12 “Cabin” (B+)

This was an absolutely hilarious half-hour, thanks to some very wise segmenting of the characters, sending two couples off into the woods together and brewing another peculiar bromance on the home front. Jess inviting Nick and Angie along on her weekend date with Sam was a move destined for disaster, and something he seemed entirely opposed to until he learned that it was free. What the weekend showed, more than anything, was that Sam is capable of change and Angie just isn’t. Painting him as a half-decent romantic and, occasionally, a giddy kid, when it came to firing a gun, was fun, and it’s nice to see him redefined with plenty of other problems for Jess to face. Nick failing to eat grapes after drinking the absinthe was one of the episode’s funniest visuals, and it’s a real shame that his honest conversation with Angie about wanting to do normal couple things prompted her to leave rather than to stay and try to be with him. As always, the friendship between Nick and Jess is one of the best reasons to watch this show. Though I would argue that the friendship between Schmidt and Winston is equally compelling, best exemplified in this episode by Schmidt’s horribly misdirected effort to help Winston accept himself and Winston’s subsequent prank which led to two near-muggings. Max Greenfield, the standout actor from this ensemble, helps to sell Schmidt’s obliviousness so well, and, for the first time in a while, Lamorne Morris deserves credit too for stepping up to the plate when Winston finally got something interesting to do.
