What I’m Watching: Justified (Season Premiere)

Justified: Season 4, Episode 1 “Hole in the Wall” (B+)

I was so excited for the return of this show, and, after the conclusion to its stellar third season, I had no idea where this year was going to go. What we got this time was a less certain but entirely captivating introduction to an unknown plotline, somewhat reminiscent of last year’s opener with Desmond Harrington’s Ice Pick, a memorable character without a season-long purpose. I suspect that will be the case with Jody Adair, who made quite an impression as a criminal capable of going toe-to-toe with Raylan and clearly undisturbed by the notion of murder. I immediately recognized his portrayer as Chris Chalk, who played Walker on “Homeland.” I’m also intrigued by bail bondsman Sharon Edmunds, particularly because of the relationship that she and Raylan apparently had in the past. The best guest star, however, was Patton Oswalt, fresh off an entertaining stint on “Burn Notice,” who fit right into this show’s universe as Constable Bob Sweeney. I do hope that he sticks around to further assist Raylan. Arlo’s murder of his fellow inmate suggests that Raylan and Bob have stumbled onto something dangerous, and something tells me that Raylan, now very much out on his own, will continue to press until he figures out just what it is. I can’t explain just how fantastic a character Boyd is, interspersing Isaac Asimov quotes with biblical citations as he threatens a man’s life. Colt is an interesting new character, and hopefully Boyd will in fact be clearer with his instructions in the future to avoid civilian casualties. Hiding money from Ava is curious, and I can’t wait to see how this season plays out and develops.
