What I’m Watching: Shameless (Season Premiere)

Shameless: Season 3, Episode 1 “El Gran Canon” (B+)

It would be easy to assume that this show has hit its very deliberate lows after two superb seasons on the air, but it’s clear that it’s capable of reaching even more mesmerizingly miserable depths. Of particular repute in this hour were Frank’s ability to smuggle eighteen balloons to get him passage out of Mexico, Fiona’s waste management job, and Kev and Veronica’s latest effort to make money, which had Carl glued to the screen. Stranding Frank in Mexico while no one but Debs pines for him at home was an appropriate way to start off the year, and it’s clear that even Sheila has moved on, though her blissful time with Jody has now turned into agonizing parenting with an unimpressive partner. While spending money she needs to pay bills to give herself a chance at a great job isn’t necessarily wise, it’s good to see Fiona taking some initiative. Steve, who I still feel I need to call Steve despite the fact that everyone now calls him Jimmy, got out of his predicament much more easily than that poor watermelon did, and having to hold his wife’s dead boyfriend’s foot while her father sawed it off could traumatize anyone. He should be out of the woods as long as Fiona continues to be allured rather than turned off by his mystery activities. Lip and Ian are both at interesting places in their lives, and I’m so curious to see what the next step is for both of them with such high hopes not too far ahead. I’m thrilled to have this show back, especially since it’s one whose level of quality I forget while it’s off the air.
