Golden Globe Winner Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a Television Series

The competition: Hayden Panettiere’s Southern singer (Nashville), Archie Panjabi’s legal investigator (The Good Wife), Sarah Paulson’s campaign advisor (Game Change), Maggie Smith’s stuffy countess (Downton Abbey), Sofia Vergara’s pregnant Colombian wife (Modern Family).

For your information: Smith and Vergara are returning nominees, earning their second and third nominations, respectively. Paulson was previously nominated in this category in 2006 for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” Panettiere appears on a freshman show, while Globe voters have apparently first taken notice of Panjabi in her show’s fourth year. This category has little consistency in its list of winners, alternating between drama series, comedy series, miniseries, and TV movies without much of a pattern. “Game Change” is nominated for Best Miniseries or TV Movie, “Downton Abbey” for Best Drama Series, and “Modern Family” for Best Comedy Series.

Who should win? I haven’t seen Paulson, but I’d go with Smith, Panettiere, or Panjabi over Vergara this year.

Who will win? She had to contend against Jessica Lange last year, but this time, Smith is going to win.
