What I’m Watching: You’re the Worst

You’re the Worst: Season 2, Episode 9 “LCD Soundsystem” (B)

This show has taken a very dark turn as of late, and it’s working to a degree. It does detract from this show’s usual nature of having its characters do deplorable things and enjoy them, but maybe that’s a more serious commentary on what being that kind of person can do to you. This episode was framed in a strange way, introducing new characters who seemed like they used to be Gretchen and Jimmy but had grown up and turned into exactly the kind of people that they hated and thrived on mocking as a result of their circumstances. Not even seeing Gretchen until she was hiding in the yard watching them was odd, and ending the episode with her bawling hysterically while Jimmy ripped apart the couple without noticing that she was crying was pretty unsettling. I did like the casting of Lexi and Rob, with Tara Summers from “Boston Legal” and “Ringer” and Justin Kirk from “Weeds” occupying the roles, making them both seem cool and interesting, albeit not entirely settled in their current lives. Rob was obviously much more distressed, as evidenced by his plea to Gretchen to invite him out with them, and Gretchen and Jimmy walked out immediately after inciting some major havoc in their relationship. Jimmy seemed pleased, but Gretchen was obviously devastated. What has become of this show about terrible people thriving on doing terrible things?
