What I’m Watching: Grandfathered

Grandfathered: Season 1, Episode 10 “Perfect Physical Specimen” (B-)

There’s no denying that this episode was entertaining, even if it was a bit lacking in terms of actual content and depth. Jimmy not having been to the doctor for a check-up in years is the kind of thing that could only happen in TV, especially considering how well he takes care of himself, apparently with no medical advice at all. Casting Dr. Phil as his physician was a funny way of mocking him since the celebrity psychologist isn’t actually a medical doctor. Taking Edie in the middle of the night to a random rooftop with personal significance was a strange way of facing his fears, but his family seemed moved enough by his wanting to protect her that they weren’t too angry with him for kidnapping her in the middle of the night. I wish we had seen more of Sara and the Keeners, her intimidating group of friends who manage to make anyone like them so that they don’t ever have to leave a restaurant. Sara is a great character and I like when we see her doing more, like when she tried to send a sexy picture and failed miserably. Ravi and Annelise trying to break into Jimmy’s safe took up an awful lot of the plot in this episode, and the guesses that they made to try to crack it were most entertaining, as was their disappointment with what they found inside and his immediate willingness to tell them both what was in it and what the combination was.
