What I’m Watching: The Grinder

The Grinder: Season 1, Episode 10 “The Olyphant in the Room” (B-)

It’s almost as if Timothy Olyphant was cast on this show purely so that Dean could deliver the line that also serves as the title of this episode. His presence isn’t irksome, it’s just not doing quite as much as it could, and it’s not permitting Claire to be her own character, which I usually like since she manages to defy the obsession with Dean that everyone has along with precious few others, mainly just Stewart and Debbie. A reporter coming to do a story on Stewart wasn’t quite as boring an idea as his children made it out to seem, but naturally there was an angle, and instead of trying to praise the actor, it was a smear piece designed to make him look ridiculous for being, among other things, delusional. The best part of that whole plotline, which took a long time to play out, was that Dean only listened to the positive things that the reporter had to say about his brother and ignored every negative thing that was written about him. It was also very entertaining to watch Stewart try to do his best impression of Dean and say things the way that he would say them, only to have the effect muddled by people not being able to hear him or not bothering to listen. It does seem like the Olyphant will continue to be in the room, possibly with his own parking space, and it’s going to make Dean go even crazier than he already is, which should hopefully be fun to watch.
