What I’m Watching: New Girl (Season Premiere)

New Girl: Season 5, Episode 1 “Big Mama” (B-)

I’m still not clear on why FOX decided to hold off premiering this show’s latest round until midseason, and I thought it had to do with Zooey Deschanel being pregnant, but she’s front and center in this episode and even a fall down the stairs didn’t put her out of commission enough to temporarily leave the show. I used to love this show, and I still plan on watching it even if it never returns to its original quality. When the roommates and Cece were gathered together, it dawned on me that someone was missing, and though I found Coach annoying, it does feel emptier without him. Winston is still at his weirdest, not knowing how to pull pranks appropriately and freaking out after he lifted up a car to save someone and got a lot of praise for doing it. For once, Schmidt is in the right and it’s Cece who messed up by not telling her disapproving mother about her engagement. Schmidt did do an incredible job of trying to get her to like him and learning the dance to impress her, but she isn’t having any of it, which is going to make their engagement period all the more stressful for a very hurt Cece. Nick picking up a random woman he thought was Cece’s mom was typical, and naturally he’d still try to have conversations with her long after he realized the truth. I hope this season will be good - it would be great for it to return to its glory days and offer up some true entertainment.
