What I’m Watching: New Girl

New Girl: Season 5, Episodes 17 and 18 “Road Trip” and “A Chill Day In” (C/B-)

Ah, the bachelor and bachelorette parties. I suppose it’s fitting that these two episodes aired back-to-back, especially since I wouldn’t have wanted to have this absurdity play out over the course of two weeks. The desert adventure that led to Nick and Schmidt challenging a bunch of angry muscular men in a bar to a fight is exactly the kind of thing that keeps this show from being the great and enjoyable sitcom it used to be. Those are highly exaggerated plotlines, and there’s just no need for it. Winston being obsessed with seeing his phone so that he could hear from Jess about Aly was more credible and entertaining, as was Robbie’s misplaced and ill-timed notion to speak up about his affection for Cece during her fiancé’s bachelor party. I enjoyed the girls’ time much more, namely when they went to the store and tried to steal the bread machine and ran into the second episode’s saving grace, Aly. The girls getting high was fine, but it was when they bumped into Aly and she asked to join their plans after they said hello to her and couldn’t remember a thing that the episode worked a lot better. I think Nasim Pedrad is a great addition to the show and it’s nice to see her more relaxed out of uniform. And hooray for her kissing Winston and then reacting to the crazy news that the man is married, but only as a prank! Who knows what’s next for them, but I can’t wait to see!
